What do you do when you come to fallen trees while mountain biking? Do you find another way? Or do you hike-a-bike?
Team Whoops Witch Way chose the hike-a-bike option. We pick up our metal steeds and carry them through the scrub or over fallen branches to continue our journey. It’s good practice for the realities of adventure racing where many checkpoints require some scrub bashing.
This morning, we came across another rider who warned us the path was unridable due to a fallen tree. He must take the other option of turning around.
It caused me to ponder the different ways we all interact with nature while out riding. For some people, nature might be scenery they ride through while following purpose-built trails. For others, nature is something to be part of and obstacles are a natural part of the experience.
Team Whoops Witch Way are gaining confidence on the bike and in our preparation for the Kathmandu Adventure Race on 9 March. We’re riding more than we walk and we’re working together well as a team.
Total: 16.28km mountain bike ride

I entered the Trailmix MTB race last year, not knowing exactly what MTB was- I swear I almost DIED at least 5 times as I fumbled over random logs, mud holes and a whole lot of steep dirt hills! But at the end of it all (I obviously finished last, with the pro’s lapping me at least twice haha) I gave it another shot when there wasn’t a competition and started to enjoy the twist and turns the rough terrain offered.
In fact, I think I got to that inner zen’ness you are describing, where I was appreciating the beauty of the scenery. Just me, the land and my (rental) mountain bike
Thanks for the reminder to dust my helmet off again and hit the track once again before summer disappears!
Sounds like you had a great time. Well done on giving the event a go. Especially if you had to rent a mountain bike to do it. That is awesome
Definitely get out there and hit the trails
